Aidi (Atlas Mountain Dog)

Breed Group: Working

"I smell trouble..."

Breed Profile

The Aidi is a Moroccan breed that is commonly used to protect livestock, although they are not a herding breed. They are energetic and like to be in charge. If you’re looking for a great watchdog, have lots of space, and are ready to be the alpha leader of your house, an Aidi would make a loyal friend.

Behavior

Aidi’s are loving and loyal to their owners, but can sometimes be a bit more leery of strangers or other animals. They make excellent watchdogs and will always let you know when anything (or anyone) is approaching. Although they are strong-minded and will take every inch you give them, they are also very sensitive and require a kind-yet-firm touch during training.

Coat

The Aidi has a thick, medium-length coat that sheds seasonally. You’ll want to brush them at least once a week to remove dead hair and cut back on the amount of Aidi fur you find around your house.

Lifestyle

The Aidi can adapt to living indoors or out, but should have access to a large, safe area to burn off some of their excessive energy. They are best suited to life in rural areas where they can spend lots of time playing outside. Aidis love their families and get along well with kids, but can sometimes be overly rambunctious with toddlers. Cats and Aidis get along, especially if they are raised together. However,  outdoor cats may want to steer clear of a Aidi, as they love to chase.

Activity

Aidi were bred to keep an eye on livestock and people while they are in camp. Their instincts tell them they need to roam, searching for anything that might be dangerous. You’ll want to exercise an Aidi extensively and provide them with a safe space where they can play outdoors. Take your Aidi for long walks or hikes, and they’ll get into less trouble at home. Of course, that doesn’t mean they won't get into ANY  trouble, but nobody’s perfect.
