Airedale Terrier

Breed Group: Terrier

"King of the terriers; king of your heart"

Hypoallergenic

Breed Profile

Airedale Terriers are a good mix of naughty and nice. They love exercise and bonding with their families but also can be stubborn in certain situations. If you’re in it for the long run, they’ll be there to keep you entertained and protected.

Behavior

Nicknamed the one and only “king of terriers,” Airedales are unique in every way. Their rough exterior and stubbornness can sometimes overshadow their kindness, but their playful personalities always shine through. Airedales are typically quiet dogs who are courageous and sometimes mischievous. Even when they get into trouble, their charm and coy smile makes it hard to stay mad long. If you can keep them in line, they’ll be your trusted partner and friend for life.

Coat

Airedale Terriers have typical terrier coats and trademark goatees. The outer layer has a uniquely smooth and wire-haired feel, and the undercoat is short and soft to keep them warm. Airedale Terriers have mostly tan coats with bits of black along the back and sides. Sometimes, they also have a mixed black and white patch, known as a “grizzle.” Their shedding is light, but they need occasional brushing to stay smooth.

Lifestyle

Airedale Terriers are perfect pets for families with children because they aren’t aggressive and genuinely love their families. Airedales get along with kids of all ages, as well as other household animals. They’re fearless protectors known for their responsive nature and innate confidence. However, Airedales tend to be dismissive of rules unless properly trained and could do serious damage to the house if left to roam free. They can live either indoors or outdoors but need to be supervised with ample space to play.

Activity

Due to their natural affinity for hunting and the great outdoors, Airedale Terriers need to be active. Taking walks throughout the day, playing fetch in a big yard, and having a companion will keep them feeling fresh and frisky. Puppies require a bit more exercise, so be prepared for lots of walks and playtime from day one.
