Intelligent and fiercely loyal, the Anatolian Shepherd makes a wonderful companion and guard dog. They are naturally protective, so rest assured that they’ll be by your side through thick and thin. This breed gets along well with children and other animals, especially if they are raised together. They also love being in charge, so let them know who’s boss, or they’ll begin to think that they're head honcho. Anatolian Shepherds love big spaces and require plenty of exercise and playtime, so the more attention you give them, the happier they’ll be.
Temperament and Behavior
Anatolian Shepherds are a loyal, smart, independent breed that were originally bred to guard flocks of sheep, so they have a natural desire to protect their families. It’s important to show your Anatolian Shepherd that you’re in charge, or they’ll become stubborn and disobedient. They like to have plenty of space to run and roam, so large rooms and big yards are ideal. This breed is also known to wander, so it might be wise to invest in a microchip to keep track of these curious companions.
Coat & Grooming
Anatolian Shepherds are best known for having white cream, “sesame,” and piebald coats. The piebald coats are white with large, colorful spots that usually cover about ⅓ of their body. These pups often have black ears and masks, which make them easy to recognize. Their double coat feels wiry and thick, especially around the collar and throat. Anatolian Shepherds don’t need much grooming - a few brushings a year will do, but they may require a few extra sessions during the summer months when they shed more due to the heat.
Lifestyle & Living Conditions
Anatolian Shepherd make the perfect family companion and guard dog. They’re smart and courageous, but not aggressive toward people or other pets. Early socialization helps them get along with others even better. These dogs are great with children, especially when they’re raised together. However, if you want your Anatolian Shepherd to guard your flock, they should live outdoors and not be treated as a family pet. Because of their size and activity level, this breed is better suited for large spaces rather than apartments.
Exercise & Activity
The Anatolian Shepherd requires a lot of exercise, so be prepared to get a workout. A yard with a fence is ideal, as they love to run and play on their own. Even if you have a large yard, they’ll still need a regular daily walk and activities to keep them busy.
