Basset Bleu de Gascogne

Breed Group: Hound

"I’ve got all the big Basset traits in a smaller package!"

Breed Profile

The Basset Bleu de Gascogne is a smaller Basset breed with a sweet personality, keen nose for hunting, and unique coat. Their coloring and expression may seem blue, but you’ll find these dogs to be happy, loving friends for the whole family.

Behavior

The Basset Bleu de Gascogne is a laid-back, happy dog that’s quite content as a loner or as part of a larger pack. Like other Basset breeds, these dogs have a great nose, loud bark, and strong work impulse. Despite their unique body type, they’re surprisingly agile. After a long day’s work, they love spending mellow nights at home snuggling up with the family.

Coat

The Basset Bleu de Gascogne’s coat makes it stand out from other Basset Hounds. They have short, smooth fur that’s mostly white with ticks that make it look bluish, along with brown spots and tan marks around their eyes and ears. Grooming these dogs is easy. All they need is a good brushing once in a while to keep them looking and feeling their best.

Lifestyle

Basset Bleus are adaptable dogs that can live in urban or rural settings and love being around adults, children, and other dogs. They won’t warm up quite as quickly to cats but can learn to play nicely if they’re trained and socialized. These dogs are smaller than traditional Basset Hounds and don’t need as much space, but they still like having room to roam and explore the outdoors. They’re also known to be quite vocal, so they may not be the best fit for apartments or close quarters.

Activity

The Basset Bleu de Gascogne is a hunter that’s used to tracking scents and working, so they need to be active each day. They enjoy walks, hikes, and being outdoors. If they don’t get enough exercise or interaction, the Basset Bleu is known to howl and make messes, so room to roam is paramount. When you’re out with these dogs, remember to keep them on a leash, as they tend to run off when they smell something interesting.
