Deutscher Wachtelhund

Breed Group: Hound

"I can sniff like a bloodhound and swim like a fish!"

Breed Profile

The Deutscher Wachtelhund is known for being a talented hunting dog, famous for their focus and wavy red coat. They are excellent at sniffing out all types of fowl and small prey and love the company of their human companions.

Behavior

The Deutscher Wachtelhund is an avid hunter and explorer. These dogs love to hunt and need an owner who feels the same. They are friendly to their masters, frequently returning to check in with their owners while on the trail. The Deutscher Wachtelhund is super intelligent and calm once they’ve been trained, and they will stay loyal to their families throughout their lives.

Coat

The Deutscher Wachtelhund is known for having a long, wavy, red coat covering most of their bodies, with feathering over their legs and in other patches. Occasionally, they will have white spots. To keep their coats managed, they require weekly brushing to keep the dead hairs away and usually just an occasional bath is enough to keep them clean.

Lifestyle

Deutscher Wachtelhunds need owners who are avid hunters. They love their families and want to live inside homes with them. They are great around most people and when properly trained, can live well with other dogs and children. They form loyal bonds with their masters, especially the kind of master interested in joining them on the hunting trail.

Activity

The Deutscher Wachtelhund is an active, vibrant breed that prefers to be outside playing and hunting. They are brave and will courageously stand up to animals that are larger than them when they feel that they or their family may be in danger. On the days that they don’t hunt, they will still need long, brisk walks outdoors. Due to their high activity requirements, the Deutscher Wachtelhund may not be the right breed for everyone. They will certainly lap you in swimming though, since they’re always eager to take a dip!
