English Bulldog

Breed Group: Non-sporting

"Grump face galore!"

Breed Profile

The English Bulldog is a famously calm and friendly family pet. Their wrinkly folds make them appear vicious, but they're actually more likely to take a nap than they are to ward off an attacker. They are calm, dignified, and adapt well to small living spaces, as they quite like the indoors, thank you very much.

Behavior

The English Bulldog is a calm and affectionate animal, gentle with children, but also known for their courage and guarding abilities. While they're pretty low-key, they will occasionally get possessive and display guarding behaviors over food, furniture, toys, or other spots in the house. For this reason, they need to know who the proper master is. If they understand their place, the English Bulldog will actually be a lot less stressed and a happier family companion.

Coat

The English Bulldog has a short, flat, and sleek coat, and they generally have thick folds of skin on their brow and around their eyes leading to long jowls. They come in a range of colors from red, fawn, white, brindle, and "piebald," a common spotting pattern. They need to be bathed occasionally, but their faces need a damp cloth wipe down everyday to care for inside those wrinkles. They are average shedders, so brushing keeps the loose hairs under control.

Lifestyle

The English Bulldog can make their home in any environment, from apartments to big houses, as long as they can live inside. They love to be around people and when properly socialized, they are excellent and friendly with just about everyone. The Bulldog will seek out human attention, getting as much as they possibly can. A Bulldog can occasionally be a bit dominating, needing a good leader who can display strong leadership, so they don't take over the household. They will sometimes be combative with strange dogs, so watch them around visiting canines.

Activity

The English Bulldog might have a strong guarding instinct, but this isn't an energetic dog. They prefer the indoors and are generally pretty inactive. They are good for apartment life and will do okay without a yard. No matter what though, they still need a daily walk to keep them exercised and informed of proper behavior around humans.
