Overview
The English Shepherd is a highly intelligent breed who keeps to the rules. They love to be in charge and will show their bossy side when they think things are amiss. However, they have a sweet temperament and are faithful family companions.
The English Shepherd is a popular working dog whose bossy side frequently shows through, but they watch and guard all for their owner's and family's benefit. They are quick to learn and love a variety of jobs, including herding, guard dog, and family companion. The English Shepherd is sometimes similar to a Collie in appearance, with medium-long, fluffy coats, and white, brown, and black markings. These helpful and beautiful dogs are wonderful with children and can't wait to become your best friend.
Temperament and Behavior
The English Shepherd was bred to be helpful. They love to work and be there for you. They know the rules and will regularly try to enforce them, so proper training from puppyhood is important for these intelligent dogs. They love to be with both animals and people, although they like to be top dog at times. This means a strong and confident master who trains them well is essential. They dislike strangers and will definitely let you know when things are amiss.
Coat & Grooming
The English Shepherd's coat is medium length and can be straight, wavy, or curly. Their coats are smooth and can be a mix of brown, tan, black, white, and occasionally brindle. Even with these fluffy coats, their care is minimal; they need weekly brushing and just the occasional bath when necessary to keep them clean and happy. Luckily, dirt seems to just slide off their smooth coats.
Lifestyle & Living Conditions
The English Shepherd is a natural family pet and can live in a variety of households. They adapt easily to working on the farm, as well as being the fun time family dog. They need a moderate amount of exercise each day, usually walks or jogs will do just finely. English Shepherds do well with children but not necessarily other dogs, unless they are raised together.
Exercise & Activity
Being willing and able to adapt to a variety of activity levels is a plus to owning an English Shepherd. They need just a moderate amount of daily exercise, such as walking or jogging, but are also content to hang out on the sofa with you. They do love to play outside, being bred for work, so Frisbee, flyball, and fetch are favorite activities for this fun-loving friend.
