Overview
English Springer Spaniels are energetic dogs that love to be outdoors. Playful and affectionate, they make a great addition to the family, especially one with kids who they can run around with. These dogs are sociable and do well with other animals.
No matter the weather, the playful English Springer Spaniel loves to be outdoors. Rainy day? Even better. This breed is a big fan of the water and will take any opportunity for a good romp in a sloppy mud puddle. If the weather does happen to keep this breed indoors, they enjoy company. Two-legged. Four-legged. They don’t discriminate. This sociable spaniel likes to be a part of the family with other dogs or even the family cat.
Temperament and Behavior
Fun-loving and happy-go-lucky pretty much sums up the personality of an English Springer Spaniel. They are a playful and energetic breed. They also love their people. And although your English Springer Spaniel may alert you about a stranger with a bark or two, a quick pet from this new person will put them back at ease. Seeking companionship, they may also bark when left alone, but they are sure to meet you at the door with an excited, wagging tail when you get home!
Coat & Grooming
The English Springer Spaniel’s coat may be long or short depending on whether they are from a show dog or working lineage. The shorter coat requires minimal upkeep. A brushing once a week should keep it in good shape. While the longer-haired dogs require a bit more brushing and trimming to stay free of mats. This breed does shed, but regular maintenance reduces the amount. It is recommended to trim the fur on the English Springer Spaniel’s paws to keep these adventurous dogs on their feet and free of brush.
Lifestyle & Living Conditions
An English Springer Spaniel’s high energy level means they require daily exercise. They enjoy being a part of an active family and do well with other dogs and most animals. Their natural hunting instincts might come into play, though, when around birds. These athletic dogs need space to run and require a fenced-in yard, as they might wander off on an adventure.
Exercise & Activity
Want to see a big smile on an English Springer Spaniel’s face? Bring them hunting with you or enter them in a dog agility competition. They are considered a sporting dog for a reason and enjoy showing off their skills and stamina. Going on daily walks, playing fetch, and splashing around in the water will all serve to keep an English Springer Spaniel happy.
