Overview

The Entlebucher Mountain Dog may be slightly smaller than other Swiss Mountain Dogs, but they pack a powerful punch. These hard-working pups have endless energy and an unbeatable work ethic. Their days involve protecting their family, chasing animals around the yard, and getting their blood pumping for hours on end.

The Entlebucher Mountain Dog may be the smallest of the Swiss Mountain Dogs, but you’d never know judging by their energy and work ethic. This powerful pup was created to herd cattle, so they love working. Whether they're playing in the yard, herding their flock, or keeping an eye on their family, they take their job seriously and won’t quit until it’s done. In addition to being good watchdogs, Entlebuchers are wonderful family companions. They love children and any other pets in the house, but they’ll be protective when it comes to strangers and other stray animals. The more activity and attention you give these dogs, the happier they’ll be.

Temperament and Behavior

Entlebucher Mountain Dogs are brave, hard-working, and guarded. They love having a job to do, especially if it involves keeping their family or territory safe. Their protectiveness, caution around strangers, and deep bark make them great watchdogs. In fact, they love climbing on top of the couch or the highest spot in the room to keep an eye on things from above.

Coat & Grooming

Entlebuchers have double coats of short, thick fur. Their hair is usually black, white, and rust-colored, but other color combinations are possible too, such as blue, white, and tan tri-color, or rust and white bi-color. These dogs shed frequently, especially in spring when they lose their winter coat. However, their hair is easy to maintain. All they need is a good brushing each week to stay looking and feeling good.

Lifestyle & Living Conditions

The Entlebucher Mountain Dog does best in a home where they can be involved in all activities and keep an eye on the family. They’re very kid-friendly and consider themselves the child’s protector. Entlebuchers are large dogs, though, and should be watched around small children. Their protectiveness extends to other cats and dogs in the home, but they are not as fond of animals outside of their family. The Entlebucher’s herding instincts may kick in and make it more likely to chase and play rough.

Exercise & Activity

Entlebucher Mountain Dogs were bred to herd cows, so they’re used to running around a lot. Even if they are not part of the farm life, they need an owner who can keep up with their exercise needs. These dogs need a few hours of walking, running around, or playing hard each day. They also love having a job to do, so the busier you can keep them, the better.
