Overview
French Bulldogs are about as sweet as they come. Happy-go-lucky, endlessly entertaining, and with more personality than their compact little bodies should be able to hold, Frenchies live for their people. Whether they're making you laugh, cuddling on the couch, or following you from room to room, a French Bulldog will fast become the heart of your family.
The French Bulldog’s grumpy grimace couldn’t be more opposite to their sweet personalities. These charming, cheerful dogs are known for their goofy looks and undeniable loyalty. They don’t need much grooming, activity, or care—all they want is plenty of time and attention. French Bulldogs are one of the most family-friendly breeds around. They enjoy palling around with kids, adults, and other pets. You may be tempted to snuggle with them, but their snoring and drooling habits may make you think twice. Even if you don’t invite them into bed, be sure to keep Frenchies inside, where they can escape the heat, be close to you, and soak up all the love around them.
Temperament and Behavior
French Bulldogs are smart, simple, affectionate, and playful pups. They’re fearless in the face of danger but also have a sensitive side. Although they have frowny faces, Frenchies are known for their happy-go-lucky attitude and loyalty. These dogs are happiest by their owner’s side and will misbehave if they don’t get enough attention.
Coat & Grooming
The French Bulldog has a fairly fine coat of short and smooth hair that can be fawn, white, or brindle, with a variety of markings. These dogs also have soft, loose skin that forms wrinkles on their head and shoulders. While their coats don't shed much, the Frenchie’s wrinkles need a bit more TLC. Keep the folds clean at all times using a cloth or special lotion to avoid common skin infections.
Lifestyle & Living Conditions
French Bulldogs love living with other dogs, pets, and kids. They’re great family pets and adapt well to just about any setting, including apartment living. Some Frenchies are cautious with strangers, but most are friendly to everyone. They love to snuggle but tend to drool or snore, making them less-than-ideal bed buddies. French Bulldogs also hate hot weather and swimming, so keep them indoors and away from water.
Exercise & Activity
French Bulldogs need a bit of activity each day, but they’re pretty low maintenance when it comes to exercise. A short walk or play session in the yard should do the trick. Frenchies don’t have much stamina and are sensitive to the heat, so don’t expect much from them in the sporting department.
Health Considerations
Brachycephalic airway syndrome, intervertebral disc disease, hip dysplasia, allergies, cherry eye, patellar luxation, heat sensitivity. Notes: With the increase in breeding of these newly popular dogs, I see much more behavioral and other health issues in practice. Finding a good breeder who breeds with temperment and health of the dog is crucial for all breeds but potentially more for this and other breeds growing in popularity.
