Silky Terrier

Breed Group: Toy

"I'm a busy-body!"

Hypoallergenic

Breed Profile

The Silky Terrier is intelligent and courageous. This also means that this breed can act like the spoiled only-child with their possessiveness and attitude. Once you get passed that, you’ll fall in love with their fun and playful antics.

Behavior

The Silky Terrier is smart and very playful. They are full of energy and can be a demanding breed. They are also lively and very affectionate, especially with children. This dog is loyal and protective of their owners. As puppies, they need to be introduced to cats so they aren't chasing each other around like Heathcliff and Spike. Careful and gentle training is required for this breed.

Coat

They have a long, smooth, silky coat (hence the name Silky Terrier) that is very shiny. Colors range from the highly coveted steel-blue to light or dark blue-gray and brown. They have no undercoat, so they are not prone to shedding, which is great for allergy sufferers. Silky Terriers do require regular brushing for at least 15 minutes and an occasional bath and teeth cleaning.

Lifestyle

The Silky Terriers can adapt easily to their owner’s lifestyle and would be a good fit for apartment life. Their high intelligence level allows them to be trained quickly. They are good with children and other pets once they are socialized with them. They definitely need to live indoors with their families but also love to play out in the yard.

Activity

They have high energy levels, so a daily walk will keep them happy. They love to play and run around, so they are ideal for families with children. They have lots of stamina and will love you best if you can keep them busy for a while each day with toys, and chase, and play.
