"Drool all day, drool all night!"
Spanish Mastiffs are fearless livestock guardians and loyal family protectors. These reliable dogs enjoy the company of their families but are not cuddlers. Spanish Mastiffs are at their best when working and generally have an even-keeled attitude.
Spanish Mastiffs are a noble breed who can be described as the “strong, silent type.” If your Spanish Mastiff doesn’t respond to your commands, it doesn’t mean they don’t understand you. They are very smart and simply might not feel like doing what you ask. Having strong leadership skills as an owner can help them hear you better. Training is also important with this big breed and will help these protective pooches be more accepting of new people and pets.
Spanish Mastiffs are big, big dogs, and a lot of fur comes with this large frame. They have a short, dense double coat that covers all that loose skin. Spanish Mastiffs do shed, but you’ll notice more hair around the house in the springtime when their coat lets go of that extra winter bulkiness. To keep their coat looking healthy, be sure to brush them on a weekly basis, and bathe them as needed.
Spanish Mastiffs are pretty adaptable and thrive in frigid conditions, but if they had their choice, they’d prefer to be in a dry climate. Their large, stocky frame requires some indoor and outdoor space. Spanish Mastiffs are friendly with children but aren’t always aware of their size. For this reason, they are better companions for older children who won’t be hurt by an accidental bump.
Spanish Mastiffs are walkers as opposed to runners. They can be swift if they need to protect their loved ones, but other than that, you won’t see these heavyset dogs running too often. A long daily walk and a large backyard is a good combination for these dogs. Spanish Mastiffs aren’t exceptionally sporty, but they can be trained to pull a heavy cart for work or play.
