Staffordshire Bull Terrier

Breed Group: Terrier

"I'm more sweet than scary!"

Breed Profile

The Staffordshire Bull Terrier’s personality defies their reputation.  These sweet and sensitive pups are more likely to stay glued to your side than pick a fight. If you want a loving family companion that keeps you energized and entertained, look no further than the Stafford.

Behavior

Staffordshire Bull Terriers are brave, obedient, and great with children. They’re surprisingly smart and tenacious but not aggressive toward people, as their name may suggest. These dogs have a strong prey drive, though, and don’t get along as well with other animals as they do with humans. Staffords are high energy and always ready for new adventures. They adore their owners and want to be by their side constantly, but they will go into watchdog mode when they perceive danger is near.

Coat

Staffordshire Bull Terriers have short and smooth coats. They come in white, white with brindle or red patches, fawn, red, brindle, or blue. Because their coat is so short, these dogs don’t need much grooming. Brush them a few times a week, and bathe them only when necessary to keep your Stafford in good condition.

Lifestyle

This breed is known as the “nanny dog” because they're so good with kids. However, their friendliness doesn’t usually apply to other dogs or pets. The Stafford can coexist with other animals if they’re raised together and socialized well, but otherwise, their strong prey drive can lead them to becoming aggressive. Because these dogs love being around people and are sensitive to extreme temperatures, it’s best to keep them inside your home or apartment most of the time.

Activity

Staffordshire Bull Terriers need plenty of opportunities to run around, play ball, and fetch. These dogs ooze with energy and need plenty of long walks and play to get themselves worn out. The breed is also skilled at sports that require mental and physical exertion. Keep in mind that they aren’t good around other dogs, though, so make sure they are on a leash in dog parks or community areas.
