Overview
The Chiweenie is a compact, devoted hybrid breed combining the best of the Chihuahua and the Dachshund. Playful, loyal, and full of personality, this adaptable companion thrives in homes of all sizes and brings big energy in a small package.
The Chiweenie is a charming hybrid breed, a cross between the Chihuahua and the Dachshund, that has been winning hearts since first appearing in the United States in the 1990s. Also known as Choxie and Weeniehuahua, this purposefully bred companion combines the Chihuahua's expressive, devoted personality with the Dachshund's curiosity and determination. Compact and adaptable, Chiweenies are well-suited to a wide range of living situations, from apartments to family homes, and bring an outsized personality to wherever they live. Chiweenies possess a confident, playful nature and love attention. They tend to develop a strong bond with and an intense loyalty to one person, while also getting along well with other family members. Naturally alert and aware of their surroundings, they make attentive watchdogs who will let their family know when something is worth noting. With family and familiar friends, the Chiweenie loves to play and brings a surprising amount of energy. Early socialization and consistent positive training help them grow into confident, well-rounded companions. For the right owner, the Chiweenie is an affectionate, lively, and deeply devoted addition to daily life.
Temperament and Behavior
Chiweenies are known for being energetic, affectionate, and loyal companions. They tend to be very protective of their owners and can have a bit of a stubborn streak. They are intelligent and can be easily trained with positive reinforcement techniques. Chiweenies are good with children and other pets, but as with any breed, socialization and proper training are important to ensure they get along well with others.
Coat & Grooming
Chiweenies have a short, smooth coat that is low-maintenance and easy to care for. Their coat can come in a variety of colors, including black, brown, cream, and white, and may have markings or patterns as well. The coat may be single or double-layered, depending on the traits inherited from the parent breeds. Chiweenies do not shed excessively, but they may shed seasonally or when stressed.
Lifestyle & Living Conditions
Due to their small size, Chiweenies are great for apartment living or smaller homes. Chiweenies are intelligent and love to learn, so training and interactive games can be a great way to provide mental stimulation and exercise. Puzzle toys, hide and seek, and obedience training are all great options to keep your Chiweenie active and engaged.
Exercise & Activity
Chiweenies are a small breed with moderate exercise needs. They are energetic and enjoy playing, but they can also be content with short walks or play sessions indoors. A daily walk and some indoor playtime or training sessions should be enough to keep a Chiweenie happy and healthy.
Health Considerations
The Chiweenie is a hybrid dog with a life expectancy of 12 to 16 years. Hybrid dogs are generally believed to have fewer health issues than purebreds, and Chiweenies tend to be hardy. Chiweenies can still be prone to conditions inherited from their Chihuahua and Dachshund parents, including: Intervertebral Disc Disease (IVDD), Luxating Patella, Dental Disease, Hypoglycemia, Hypothyroidism, and Heart Problems.
