Overview

With mixed genes from a Shih Tzu and Poodle, it’s no wonder the Shihpoo is such a loving, sweet dog. These little guys adore people and will do just about anything to be with them. They don’t need much exercise or grooming, but they’ll take as much attention as they can get.

Looking for a little pup with a sweet smile and easygoing personality? The Shihpoo may fit the bill. This breed mixes the outgoing and social personalities of the Shih Tzu and Poodle. Each dog’s exact temperament will vary because of their blended genes, but overall, you can expect these pups to be playful lapdogs that love people. Shihpoos are easygoing when it comes to activity and grooming. They don’t shed much and will be happy with a bit of brushing here and there. Shihpoos also tend to be low-key dogs that don’t need much exercise. They’ll be perfectly content with just about any activity that involves being with family.

Temperament and Behavior

Both Shih Tzu and Poodles are social, friendly dogs, so Shihpoos tend to be similar. However, because of their mixed backgrounds, each dog’s personality will be different and tough to predict. Overall, you can expect these cute little pups to be very loving, playful, and good friends for other kids and pets in the home.

Coat & Grooming

The Shihpoo’s coat will range from curly to wavy to straight, depending on whether their Shih Tzu or Poodle genes are stronger. Normally, it’s curlier than the Shih Tzu but not as curly as the Poodle's. Their fur doesn’t shed much, so normal brushing or professional grooming will keep these dogs looking their best.

Lifestyle & Living Conditions

At 7-20 pounds, the Shihpoo is a great fit for apartments or houses. If they have a yard to play in, make sure your Shihpoo primarily lives indoors so they can be around people. These dogs get along well with children but prefer older kids who are more gentle. They also make good friends for other family dogs and cats.

Exercise & Activity

Shihpoos don’t need much exercise to stay happy and healthy. They usually get enough activity just by playing with their family. If you want to take your Shihpoo out, they enjoy going for walks or playing around in the grass. Some also may show an interest in dog sports, like rally and agility, especially if it gets them more attention.
