French Brittany

"Birds of a feather... are fun to chase together!"

Breed Profile

The French Brittany or Epagneul Breton has natural hunting instincts and is easily trained for all aspects of the sport. These dogs are highly intelligent and require mental and physical exercise on a daily basis. Outgoing and happy-go-lucky, they make a great pet for an active family.

Behavior

French Brittanys put their owners and family at the center of their universe. They would be around them 24/7 if they could, but when they can’t, the intelligent dogs do best when there is something or someone to keep them occupied – even if it’s another animal. If separated from others for an extended period of time, these outgoing dogs tend to let everyone know they’re lonely with their loud bark. Boredom can also bring out some destructive behavior from this breed, but with their high intelligence and an eager-to-please attitude, the French Brittany can be easy to train when done with consistency.

Coat

French Brittanys usually have a wavy coat with orange and white markings and flecking. Coloring and tail length can vary. Grooming for this breed is as simple as running a brush through their light, feathery fur once a week to keep them looking their best. A regular brushing also helps find any twigs or brush that might have come home with them. They are not known to be excessive shedders.

Lifestyle

Expect to carve out an hour or two each day for exercising your French Brittany. These high-energy dogs do best in a family home with a backyard that's big enough for them to explore and run laps around. They do not fare well in apartment life. The friendly French Brittanys enjoy the company of both the two-legged and the four-legged. They even do well with cats when socialized with them early.

Activity

The happiest French Brittanys are given a job. Tracking. Hunting. Obstacle courses. Frisbee competitions. These dogs love anything that lets them use their mind, speed and sharp nose – or anything that rewards them with a good pat of approval from their owner. An hour or two of activity per day will give you one satisfied French Brittany.
